Lemken has long been a company for picking unusual names and, true to form, opted to go with a star theme for its sprayer range. Latest addition is Vega, a star 25 light years away from earth and measuring twice the size of the sun. Astronomy lesson over, the machine in question is a new generation of trailed sprayer that will be made available later this year after being unveiled at the previous Agritechnica.

Since acquiring two sprayer manufacturers (Jacobi and RTS), Lemken has been marketing two lines of trailed sprayer — but not for much longer. Just as it overhauled its mounted sprayer range in creating the Sirius, Lemken is now turning its attention to its two trailed ranges. The new family will span 3,000 to 5,000 litres and can be equipped with a boom that folds behind the tank (as on Sirius), with the designers’ initial remit calling for a compact size and low centre of gravity while still providing a decent amount of ground clearance.

So, where better to start than at the drawbar?
There will be a high-mount hitch and low-slung drawbar options. On top of that, there’s a hydraulic ram that is controlled by a double-acting spool to adjust the drawbar to the appropriate height and degree of suspension — provided the accumulators are fitted. Lemken has opted for drawbar steering
rather than a steering axle: justification is that the designers could go for a wider tank but still achieve a narrow track width. Propelling liquid around the machine, the double piston pumps (two 260l/min units)
