Practical test: That’s the question – and a question that needs sorting very early on in the mower decision-making process. As an example of this disc/drum dilemma, profi compared two Claas mower conditioners – Corto 270 SC drum and Disco 300 disc – back in 1998. The year’s wet weather conditions provided an intriguing insight into the respective mowers’ strengths, weaknesses and basic differences in design
The Claas mowers pictured below may look the same. But raise their protective white curtains, and the full extent of the differences quickly becomes evident. Make no mistake, these two models are poles apart in terms of machine concept and design, approaching the cutting job from either end of the grass mowing spectrum.
Indeed, Claas in the UK, reckons that demand for drums on mounted mowers over 2m working width is limited, particularly given the improvements in disc model designs, and has dropped the Corto 270 from its line-up; in fact, it only ever imported the one machine. Is the Suffolk-based company correct in its thinking? Read on and draw your own conclusions.
